Ernie Els Wines Newsletter – June 2016

15 Jun

All the latest releases, news and offers from the team at Ernie Els Wines.

1. Come for a ‘chip and a sip’ at the Ernie Els winery
It’s not how you drive, but how you arrive, and if you find yourself on a golf course then somewhere along the line you are going to face a chip shot. You may well do so at Ernie Els Wines, too. Indeed, here at Ernie Els Wines we invite you to come and put your short game skills to the test at our chipping green (pictured above) while enjoying our incredible wines, delicious food, and of course experiencing the spectacular views that the estate has to offer.

2. Ernie Els Wines keeps on scoring high with Wine Spectator
The latest issue of the ‘Insider’ from Wine Spectator was released last week and is the first look at the Editors’ most exciting wines and an inside track to get your hands on highly rated wines before they sell out. Our Ernie Els Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 was among the selected wines from South Africa scoring an impressive 92 points and we’d advise you get hold of some before it’s too late!

James Molesworth, a Senior Editor who has been tasting for Wine Spectator for close to 20 years, describes the Ernie Els Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 as offering a ‘dark, alluring profile, with lots of warm charcoal and tobacco notes followed by steeped blackcurrant and blackberry fruit flavors’.

This rating is the latest in a string of outstanding ratings Ernie Els Wines has received from Wine Spectator and is just in time for this week’s US Open at Oakmont, where Ernie won his first Major Championship 22 years ago, and for Father’s Day on Sunday. Every one of the 13 vintages of our flagship wine, The Signature, has received more than 90 points with a total tally of more than thirty-six 90+ scores across the portfolio over this time. Although nowhere near the tally of 70 professional tournament wins that Ernie has amassed over a similar time, these ratings affirm the wineries uncompromising commitment to quality and excellence at every level.

What better way to spoil your Father, or yourself, than with a fine bottle of South African red to enjoy with one of the finest golf tournaments of the year.

3. Ernie Els Wines continues to break new ground abroad
The month of May saw Ernie Els Wines breaking grounds in new markets abroad. On the back of a successful London Wine Fair trade show, we headed over to Ireland to start our new partnership with James Nicholson Wine Merchants. The three-day roadshow took our team to Cork and Galway before we made our way to Slieve Donard Hotel and Spa situated in County Down. It was a great experience to meet and understand the people and personalities from the trade. Our wines showed beautifully as always and the team at James Nicholson were mightily impressed by the quality. Our wines have again proved to be one of the top flag bearers for the South African wine category as we over-deliver on quality at every price point.

Our revival of the Irish market is an integral step in rounding off our strategy for the United Kingdom. Ernie Els Wines is now readily available throughout England, Scotland and Ireland. Only Wales remains undiscovered, as it were, but our team is working on that and we will be looking to source a partner within the next 6-12 months.

All in all, we’re proud to say that Ernie Els Wines is heading into the second half of 2016 with invigorated momentum behind the brand, with further destinations in the pipeline in Scotland, England, Netherlands and Germany.

4. Wine matchmaker, Wade Bales, hosts the annual Wade Bales & Whisky Affair
The Wade Bales Wine Society is your team of personal wine advisors, hand-selecting the best wines South Africa has to offer for its members. It is no surprise that this team of wine experts hosted one of the social highlights of the year; the Wade Bales Wine & Whisky Affair, presented in Cape Town and Johannesburg, proved to be show-stoppers.

“It was a truly spectacular evening, commented L’Re Burger, assistant winemaker at Ernie Els Wines. “It was fantastic to engage with our wine consumers and hear their opinions on the wine. Great atmosphere and a definite must attend event for 2017!”

Being part of the Wade Bales Wine Society is a great privilege for Ernie Els Wines. For more information please visit http://www.wadebaleswinesociety.co.za.

5. New Vintage Release – Ernie Els Proprietor’s Syrah 2014
The prestigious Proprietor’s Syrah 2014 is the latest vintage release from the Ernie Els Wines portfolio. The 2014 vintage is a hedonistic expression, showing baked plums, bacon-fat and a hint of cinnamon. Sweetly fruited throughout, the mid-palate is elegant and yet powerful offering a contemporary, luxurious style with rich intensity and depth. Notes of peppered salami and goji berries are wound around fruit-laden tannins and well integrated oak. Irresistible now, time will offer more savoury complexity and silky length. It well age well for 7 to 10 years.

The Syrah vineyards grow on the warm north-facing slopes of the Helderberg region within the Stellenbosch appellation. The Hutton Clovelly soils contain a high gravel content, which offers rich middle-palate weight giving this wine exceptional depth and fruit purity. The Viognier is sourced from neighbouring Helderberg vineyards and was co-fermented during harvest. With an altitude of approximately 250 metres above sea level, together with the cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean just 15 kilometres away, this extends the ripening period by up to three weeks resulting in lovely phenolic ripeness.
