BMW Championship Review

10 Sep

As you saw from last week’s blog I was really excited to be back in Colorado for a PGA TOUR event and the crowds were great and the course was in amazing shape. Let’s hope we are back there sooner rather than later.

Of course, it’s disappointing to not be teeing it up at East Lake, but I definitely take heart from having played some good golf since the beginning of August: a total of 32-under par for my last six tournaments at a stroke average of 69.17, against a season average of 70.73. That’s basically a six-shot improvement over 72 holes, and shows that I am moving in the right direction and I am looking forward to the rest of the year; there is still a lot of golf to play and tournaments to win.

It is interesting to see all these statistics and analyze how our games are performing, although it is always important to have a human and personal element along with the raw data. The ‘strokes gained’ feature is helpful and has just been expanded on the PGA TOUR from putting to tee-to-green and, of course, total. I have had some good discussions with SAP too on how they want to improve this area in golf, for pros and amateurs alike. They are doing some cool work in Tennis, American Football and Soccer, too. The tools available to all golfers is pretty amazing considering how it was when I started on Tour.

My next 2-3 weeks are quite open. Having played nine weeks straight since the Scottish Open in July, it’ll be great to relax and spend some time with the family here in Florida. There are just a couple of corporate outings in the diary, then my  next tournament will be the Alfred Dunhill in Scotland and I always enjoy that. I play with my Dad and get to play some of the top courses in the area and the world. It is a great format and hopefully if the weather behaves it is one of the best weeks in golf.

Elsewhere, the Els for Autism Golf Challenge 2014 is drawing to a close. The series travelled to Hilton Head this week and is off to Austin, TX next week, which is being hosted by 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem. The ‘Beemer’ has been another pro who has been amazing to our family and the Foundation, helping in many of our pro-ams. Let me also just take this opportunity to again say a heartfelt thanks to all of the amateurs who have taken part in this year’s Golf Challenge. We’re extremely close to hitting our 2014 fundraising target of $2.5 million and everyone is looking forward to the Grand Finale in Vegas next month.

For those wanting to get into the Finale in Las Vegas there is still space available at the final event at Trump National here in Jupiter, which is a great course. Please do click here if you’d like to take part. And remember, you don’t have to play in a series event to win your place in Vegas. Any team that raises at least $13,000 automatically qualifies. There’s still time!
