RBC Canadian Open Review

28 Jul

The RBC Canadian Open is one of those events on my schedule that I always look forward to, so it’s extremely disappointing for me to not be around for the weekend.

Still, I must congratulate RBC once again for what they’ve achieved with this tournament in recent years; they’re doing a phenomenal job. For all of the players it’s a really enjoyable week, so I want to thank RBC and the fans for their customary warmth and hospitality. Honestly, it’s been a pleasure to play all around Canada in this historic tournament for these past five years.

Also, I want to applaud RBC for their efforts in driving this year’s RBCGolf4Kids charity fundraising campaign, which finished last week. It was a great format, which meant that all the RBC golfing ambassadors could jump on board and really engage with the fans out there. The icing on the cake for us was coming top of the table and securing a $165,000 donation to Els for Autism, but all of the players’ designated charities are winners as a result of the RBCGolf4Kids campaign. This year alone will see more than $500,000 donated to help children’s charities globally, which is amazing news. We’re grateful to RBC and to all of you out there who got involved.

This week we’re staying on Tour and playing Tiger’s tournament, the Quicken Loans National at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. It’s a golf course that many players already know, as it hosted previous Presidents Cup matches. I for one played here in the 1996 and 2000 (below) matches, when Peter Thomson was our International Team captain, but sadly I missed out on the most recent visit in 2005 due to the knee injury I’d sustained that summer. I remember the course well, though.

The fact that RTJ designed hundreds of courses, and yet this is the one he put his name to, would indicate the high regard he had for this place. One look and you can see why! It’s quite magnificent; a beautifully crafted layout in a wonderful, almost serene setting, and Lake Manassas is central to the whole experience. I’m excited about being back again and obviously looking to have a strong week. With my current position on the FedEx Cup rankings we need to get some serious points on the board in the coming weeks. Let’s see if we can get something going here.

Okay, that’s it for now. As always you can follow me on Twitter @TheBig_Easy.
