Ernie’s Latest News – 1 May

01 May

Time for another update. As usual with me there’s been plenty going on, both on and off the golf course.

Starting with tournament news, the steady upward curve in my game and in my results continued at the Valero Texas Open, where I had my best finish on the PGA TOUR in quite a while. The scoring in my last four events has been +4, -1, -2, -3. So we’re heading in the right direction! And that’s pretty much how my game feels. We just need to keep working, keep building, and hopefully the results will continue to improve. Wells Fargo is my next tournament and it’s always a treat to tee it up at Quail Hollow.

It’s also been a busy couple of weeks away from the tournament scene. As we reported in my previous blog, we flew to Japan in mid-April for a sponsors’ engagement with ISPS HANDA. It was an extremely enjoyable few days in the company of some of my fellow ambassadors and, of course, representatives from ISPS HANDA. Thanks so much guys for the hospitality.

After Texas I had a bit of time at home, which gave me the opportunity to rest-up and also work on my game, before we flew over to Saudi Arabia for an event celebrating the official opening of the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club (pictured below), which will play host next year to an historic new European Tour event. This golf course is spectacular and, with its setting upon a stretch of pristine Red Sea coastline, I’m sure it will quickly become one of the most recognisable and popular destinations on any travelling golfer’s wish list. The new tournament in 2019 adds another stop to the European Tour’s early-season Desert Swing and trust me everyone is going to love it there.

So anyway, I must also share with you some of the great stories coming out of The Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation in the last couple of weeks. One of our members Karabo Mokoena just won the prestigious Boland Open, while Zanele Mazibuko has received her BA Hons in Sports Management from the University of Pretoria for research on empowering female athletes in SA townships to play golf. And in the US, another of our members Jovan Rebula was part of Auburn University’s SEC Championship-winning team at Sea Island Golf Club in beautiful St. Simons Island.

Inspiring stuff. Well done to all; you make us very proud.

Meanwhile, back in South Africa, I’m told everyone had an amazing day at Zimbali GC in the latest event on Els for Autism’s Drive to Sun City series supported by Imperial KWS Logistics. Beautiful weather, a fantastic golf course in immaculate condition, and a great turnout is what this series is all about. Thanks to our new sponsors Mark White Nissan, Campari and Sky Vodka. Congrats to Shane van Rensburg and Shane Douglas on their winning score of 47 points. And, of course, big thanks to everyone at Zimbali for their support and to Gavin Woodroffe and his team for treating everyone to a magnificent day. If you’d like to participate future events, visit the website: http://www.ernieelscentre4autism.co.za/events.asp.
