Stellenbosch is synonymous with good wine and it’s no surprise that this famous university town is where Ernie Els has chosen to open his first restaurant, The Big Easy Winebar & Grill, named after the man himself.
Nestled among the quirky architecture on South Africa’s second oldest road, the oak tree-lined Dorp Street, once the ‘wagon road to the Cape’, La Gratitude is a beautiful, 17th century Cape Dutch building. Built by Dr. Meendt Borcherds it is possibly the best-known building on Dorp Street due partly to its perfectly proportioned facade with its classical gable giving the building perfect proportions and elegance.
As you’d expect, The Big Easy places the utmost importance on serving great food and fantastic wine – all in a relaxed setting. With many secret rooms to discover and lovely outdoor spaces, dining at The Big Easy showcases the best the region offers with an emphasis is on using the finest, freshest ingredients to produce world-class food in this historic setting. In addition, our own wine shop on the premises is a good opportunity to take your favourite bottles home to share with friends.
The first Big Easy Winebar & Grill opened on 1 December 2008 and reservations are recommended.
