Ernie’s Latest News – 24 September

24 Sep

Although there have been no tournaments on my schedule these past 3-4 weeks, there’s been plenty going on and actually it’s felt like quite a busy time.

Certainly lots to enjoy, too, starting with a family vacation to Costa Rica a couple of weeks ago, my first visit since officially becoming a global brand ambassador for the spectacular eco-destination that is Peninsula Papagayo (pictured below). A big thank you to everyone there for the incredible hospitality. We really loved our stay. This is such a beautiful part of the world and it’s exciting for all of us at Ernie Els Design to think of the plans we have for this resort. Click here for the full story. Suffice to say for now, though, it’s going to be a huge pleasure for me to spread the word about Peninsula Papagayo and, of course, pay many more visits in years to come.

Another partnership that I know I’m going to enjoy is signing with Bobby Jones and Sunice as my official apparel supplier, a deal that’s been in the pipeline for a while. I’ve been familiar with the Bobby Jones brand for a long time, seeing the clothes in high-end pro shops around the world and actually I’ve owned quite a few of their garments over the years. I’ve always been impressed with the look and feel of the clothing, so this is really the kind of partnership that I can appreciate on a number of levels, not least the commitment by the team at Jones Global Sports to support The Els for Autism Foundation, which we greatly appreciate.

And wearing Bobby Jones and Sunice apparel is going to be a nice way to swing into the new 2018/19 PGA TOUR season, which for me begins in Kuala Lumpur at the CIMB Classic in October, followed by the THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES in South Korea the following week. Happy to say they’re both now confirmed on my schedule and I’m very much looking forward to a fortnight in the Far East.

Before that, we’ll be teeing it up at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland and I’m really thrilled to be able to partner with my Dad again at this wonderful tournament. Dad’s had a few health issues in recent years, which makes this year’s Dunhill Links even more special for both of us. We can’t wait. It’s such a special week, playing together and also catching up with old friends, against the iconic backdrop of the Home of Golf and two other great links courses, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns. Fingers crossed that Mother Nature is kind to us. When the weather plays ball here, honestly it’s hard to beat.

Okay, just a couple more items of news before we sign off. First of all, you may recall me teaming up earlier this year with the guys at Premier Africa, leading specialists in the highest quality tours and journeys to the best African destinations. Well, we’ve now launched three incredible all-inclusive experiences offering the best golf, sights and safari that South Africa has to offer. There’s just so much magic in Africa. You see it in the people, you smell it in the air, and you feel it once you get off the plane. It’s an amazing place…if you’ll forgive the personal bias! Seriously, though, the manner in which Premier Africa is able to deliver an African experience is remarkable. The team’s passion for South Africa is very much evident and I do believe this is how our wonderful country is meant to be seen. Click here to check out the brochure and start planning your trip.

Finally, a quick shout-out to head winemaker Louis Strydom and the team at Ernie Els Wines on the news that its 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (pictured below) was rated as the best in South Africa at the recent International Wine & Spirits Competition in London. It was the only pure Cabernet Sauvignon from South Africa to be awarded 93+ points from the judges. In addition, the Ernie Els Signature 2014 had a good showing, being one of only a handful of wines in its category to score over 90 points and receive a coveted gold medal. These awards add to an already well-stocked trophy cabinet at the winery and are a testament to the years of commitment to quality and excellence shown by Louis and the team. I raise a glass to you guys!
