Ernie’s Presidents Cup review

02 Oct

So, a heavy defeat for the Internationals in this year’s Presidents Cup, but I’m proud of the way our guys came out on Sunday and played their hearts out…for the team, for themselves and for their Captain Nick Price.

Honestly, our guys couldn’t have tried any harder, but they were up against maybe the strongest, most talented American team that we’ve ever seen in the Presidents Cup. I heard Johnny Miller say he thought it was the strongest American team since the 1981 Ryder Cup.

It certainly felt like we came up against a juggernaut! You know, all credit to them; they played great and they hardly put a foot wrong it seemed. I go back to that word ‘momentum’. The Americans had all of it and we had pretty much no momentum, right from the get-go. Anyway, congratulations to Steve Stricker and his team on a great all-round performance.

We’ll obviously sit down and talk about what happened here, what we can learn and how we can be ready for Royal Melbourne in two years’ time. We’ve lost seven of these things in a row now, so there’s a lot of work to do, for sure. Let’s see.

For me personally it was an honour to be part of Nick’s team. Obviously I would absolutely jump at the chance to be the next team captain, especially with it being at the wonderful Royal Melbourne where I’ve won tournaments and have such fondness for the golf course and the fans there. My priority is to see our team be successful. That’s why I agreed to come onto the team as an assistant captain this year. We’ve got a new generation of kids and they haven’t been through the scars that some of the other guys have been through over the past 10-15 years in this competition.

But listen, we don’t want to make any excuses for last week. The truth is, we were simply outplayed at Liberty National and you have to give credit were credit is due. Like I said, this is a very talented American team, a very organised team, and they played exceptionally well. Hats off to them.

So, moving on to this week I’m back in Scotland for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship which, as most people will know, is one of my favourite stops on the golfing calendar. In fact, I recently spoke to the guys at Alfred Dunhill about what this tournaments means to me, so I’ll point you in that direction for my reflections on past tournaments and my thoughts on this coming week.
