Ernie claimed the first senior major of his career at the Kaulig Companies Championship at the iconic Firestone CC, Akron, Ohio on Sunday 14 July. It was Ernie’s third win of the 2024 Champions Tour season and it elevates him into the No.1 spot on the Schwab Cup rankings. It brings his tally of professional career wins to 79.

Speaking after the trophy presentation, Ernie commented…

“Obviously, it feels great to win again, the first senior major of my career. It’s taken a little while, but this feels very sweet. It’s kind of hard to believe, but I’ve been coming to Firestone for 32 years, it’s one of the great golf courses that we play on Tour, and this is my first win here. It goes to show that it pays to keep trying in this game!

“It was pretty tight out there today. Got myself into a great position coming down the stretch, but went for my second shot on 16 to try to make birdie and ended up making bogey, so you could say that was a bit of a mistake. But you know, you’ve just got to hang in there sometimes and get the job done. Very happy that we did. And it was so wonderful to have my son Ben here and my wife Liezl, both waiting for me when we came off the 18th green. Just needed my daughter Samantha here and we’d have had a full house. But yeah, a special week. Really enjoying my golf at the moment.

“We’re going to jump on a plane now and head straight to Scotland for the Open Championship at Royal Troon, my 33rd appearance in golf’s most historic championship. Looking forward to that, as always. I’ll write again soon. Obviously you can keep up with all my activities on and off the golf course via the usual social media platforms.
