“A little Monday excursion” was how Ernie described his latest trip from the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, California, down to Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. It was the latest in a number of site visits he’s made this past 18 months to Oleada Golf Links, an Ernie Els Design golf course located on a beautiful ocean-meets-desert landscape just 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas.
Speaking on site, Ernie commented: “It was great to be back at Oleada again with Greg Letsche [longtime senior design associate at Ernie Els Design]. This is one of the most spectacular projects on our books. We’ve got a great team here, the boys are doing an incredible job. As a golf course designer, whenever we can work in sand, it’s heaven for us! We got a lot of great work done today; we wanted to do as much as possible so that the boys can really get going. This one is going to be very special and we’re so excited for the grand opening next year.”
Greg Letsche added, “The ‘man upstairs’ gave us this incredible site and we’re now focused on the best way to fit our strategy and our hole routings into that. We’ve been walking and driving the site today, Ernie’s been hitting some shots to get a feel for how this golf course will play in the wind. With his experience of playing on links courses in The Open these past 35 years, he knows better than anyone else about the unique challenges and the virtues of designing golf courses right by the ocean. Ernie and I are so excited about the opportunity we have here to create a golf course that will not only be at the top in Mexico, but also in the rest of the world.”
