Two Weeks in Texas

24 Mar

Last week gave me some solid opportunities to work hard on my game here at the Bear’s Club.

It’s now a couple of months since my first tournament of the year and to be honest, at times my competitive rhythm has been a little out of whack, but we’re getting there. As always, you’ve just got to stay focused on what you’re doing and keep putting in the hours.

Still, there’s no substitute for getting out there and playing some competitive golf – doing it ‘under the gun’ as they say. That’s why I’m excited about this five-week stretch of tournaments coming up, with the Masters sandwiched right in the middle. Hopefully I can generate some momentum in my game and give myself that little bit of confidence and sharpness that you need in order to post some consistent numbers.

Anyway, first off we’re in Texas for a couple of weeks, starting with the Valero Texas Open, an historic tournament that goes way back to the days of Walter Hagen. My history is a little more recent! Actually, 2010 is my only previous appearance in this tournament, when it had a later slot in the calendar in mid-May right after The Players. I remember making a slow start that week, but played pretty tidily over the weekend to finish 12-under par and tied-3rd a couple of shots behind Scotty.

That was the first year any of us had played the new Oaks course at TPC San Antonio. It’s the kind of course where if you get out of position you can easily make a big number. It’s a tough test and you have to be very accurate, but also very creative. Every green is different, with a lot of run-off areas, and it always keeps you thinking. It’s different to what we play most weeks, but personally I felt comfortable out here in 2010. Hoping to have another strong week this time around, obviously.

Okay, that’s it for now. In the meantime…
