Ernie’s Latest News – 9 July

Since my last tournament, the BMW International in Germany, we’ve enjoyed a really wonderful couple of weeks at Wentworth.

The weather has been unbelievable here in the south of England, so it’s been perfect conditions to play a bit of golf at Queenwood, visit Wimbledon to watch some tennis, and just spend time relaxing at the house. We also paid a visit to the Srixon’s UK HQ to test some clubs and we’ve now got a nice new set of irons in the bag. Thanks for looking after us guys!

Overall, it’s been the ideal mix of activity and relaxation…exactly how I like my weeks off to be. The upshot is I’m now feeling nicely rested, so we made the decision to play this week’s Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at Gullane Golf Club. I’ve not played this course before and I’m looking forward to it. A few of the guys who played the Scottish here in 2015 have told me about it. It’s one of many wonderful links courses in this area, Muirfield being another, and everyone rates it very highly. A real treat for the purists by the sounds of it. To my mind, playing links golf in a great event such as this…honestly, there’s no place I’d rather be the week before The Open. Judging by the strong international field that’s assembled here, there are many who share that view also.

So before we sign off, here’s just a brief update on the 2018 Drive to Sun City Els for Autism Series, supported by Imperial KWS Logistics, which recently made its eighth stop of the year. The venue was Randpark Golf Club’s recently renovated Firethorn course, which I’m told was in excellent condition. Once again there was a great turnout of 144 players, all enjoying some balmy winter weather.

Congrats to the winners Mevin Govenor and Yogan Chetty who scored a fantastic 49 points. That earns them a place in the Grand Final at Sun City. As always with such events, there are a few well-earned thank you messages to pass on. First to Craig McLeod, our custodian of the day. Also to Karl Bauermeister and Leon Kotze from Sizwe, our sponsors on the day for the third year running. Finally, to Francois Swart at Randpark for hosting us for the fourth year running. See you next year!
